Trump commits new offence which could lead to impeachment in the middle of his own impeachment hearing
It should not, perhaps, be surprising in the extraordinary state of affairs of Trumpworld that in the middle of his impeachment proceedings the president would tweet something which could lead to a further article of impeachment. The tweet disproves Mr Trump’s claim that he was ignoring the hearings which he had claimed would go nowhere, and attacked using his usual terms against investigations into his conduct - a “worst ever witch-hunt”, “totally fake” and so on.- 5264Reactions

Private zoo owner in Crimea pleads for public to take 30 of his bears so he won't have to euthanise them
The owner of a struggling safari park in Crimea is giving more than thirty bears to save them from euthanasia. Oleg Zubkov, the owner of the Taigan Lion Park near Simferopol, said he is seeking new homes for the animals because he can no longer afford to feed them. It comes after inspectors ordered the safari park, which is famous for its large collection of lions, found violations of veterinary regulations and ordered it closed for three months. Speaking on his Youtube channel, “the Lion Man,” Mr Zubkov said he could not afford to feed and look after the animals without the revenue from ticket sales and was left with no choice but to find them new homes or put them down. “Twelve lions and tigers will be moved to other zoos shortly, and a final decision will be made about… shooting 30 bears from the park,” he says in the video. “I’ve forced into these extreme measures because there are no other options left,” he said. Oleg Zubkov with BBC television presenter Simon Reeve Credit: Jonathan Young Mr Zubkov said he had already fed several dozen of his Vietnamese pigs to the lions and tigers in a bid to cut costs, and that he had informed regional veterinary authorities about his decision to cull his bears. Valery Ivanov, the head of the state veterinary committee in Crimea, told Interfax no documents related to the killing of animals had been received. The Taigan Safari Park, which is home to 2,500 animals, was opened in 2012. Mr Zubkov also runs a second zoo, called Skazka, in Yalta. Both have been the subject of numerous complaints about the conditions in which the animals are kept, according to local officials. Last year Taigan was at the centre of a small scandal after one of the lions bit a 46 year old female tourist posing for photographs with the animal. Mr Zubkov's career has not passed without controversy Credit: Media Drum World / Alamy Stock Photo Mr Zubkov insists that his bears live in better conditions than in many other zoos in Russia, and that the biting incident was the only one of its kind. He has complained that authorities have been trying to shut him down ever since Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsular after Vladimir Putin annexed it from Ukraine in 2014. Mr Zubkov was an enthusiastic supporter the annexation at the time, and even featured in Russian television reports promising that his “fighting lions” would maintain order during the controversial referendum on “reunification” with Russia. In the months afterwards he made an unsuccessful bid to enter local politics and even tried to call Vladimir Putin during his annual phone-in show to invite him to the safari park. But by 2015 he had begun to complain that he and his zoo had become the target of a campaign of harassment by local officials apparently determined to put him out of business.- 103Reactions

The 64-year-old Texan’s involvement came to light during the testimony of former attorney Mark Scott who is facing charges of fraud and money laundering as part of the ongoing OneCoin trial in New York. ‘Ford v Ferrari’ Takes Checkered Flag With $31 Million Box Office Opening
After months of disappointing box office numbers, Fox got their first bit of good box office news since the Disney merger with the opening of “Ford v Ferrari,” which is taking an estimated $31 million from 3,528 screens. While this $97 million production has a ways to go to profitability, all the seeds are there for this racing biopic to leg out. It has awards buzz, strong overseas appeal, and an A+ on CinemaScore. “Ford v Ferrari” is now the first film with a wide release of over 3,000 screens since “Avengers: Endgame” to earn that top grade from CinemaScore.Unfortunately, Fox’s box office success this weekend did not extend to Sony and their “Charlie’s Angels” revival. The film was expected to open to No. 2 on the charts with an opening in the mid-teens. Instead, the film is now estimated for an $8.5 million opening against a $48 million budget.Audience reception was relatively positive with a B+ on CinemaScore, but tepid reviews likely weighed “Charlie’s Angels” down with a 59% Rotten Tomatoes score. Sony’s financial blow will be lessened thanks to co-financing by Perfect World and 2.0 Entertainment, but that’s no comfort to a box office market that has seen three box office flops in as many weeks, with “Angels” joining “Terminator: Dark Fate” and “Doctor Sleep.”The rest of the box office numbers aren’t very impressive either. “Charlie’s Angels” is vying for the No. 2 spot with the second weekends of Lionsgate’s “Midway” and Paramount/Walden’s “Playing With Fire,” both of which are projected for totals around $8.5 million. “Playing With Fire” has a 10-day total of $25.6 million while “Midway” has a 10-day total of $35 million.Universal’s “Last Christmas” is in fifth with $6.7 million in its second weekend and a $22.5 million total. Last week’s flop, Warner Bros. “Doctor Sleep,” fell 57% to a $6.1 million second weekend and a $25 million domestic total against a $50 million budget. The good news for Warner Bros. amidst autumn busts like “Doctor Sleep” and “Motherless Brooklyn” is that it made history this weekend with “Joker,” which earned $5.5 million in its seventh weekend and is now the first R-rated film to gross $1 billion worldwide. The studio also had a decent single-digit opening with “The Good Liar,” which opened this weekend to $5.5 million from 2,439 screens. It has a B on CinemaScore and a 62% RT score.More to come…Read original story ‘Ford v Ferrari’ Takes Checkered Flag With $31 Million Box Office Opening At TheWrap -

Three False Claims Muddying the Impeachment Debate
(Bloomberg Opinion) -- Even though public hearings on the impeachment of President Donald Trump have just begun, the subject has already become encrusted with legends and myths on all sides. In a polarized country, each side has its own talking points - and isn’t paying enough attention to the other side to know when those points are based on errors. So far, three stand out.Take White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney’s famous remark that Trump’s critics should “get over it.” This was widely taken to be a brazen statement that it was fine for Trump to use foreign policy to seek to harm his political opponents. But that’s not what Mulvaney was saying. Nor was CNN accurate in reporting, “Mulvaney confirmed the existence of a quid pro quo and offered this retort: ‘Get over it.’”Mulvaney’s press conference was on Oct. 17. He mentioned news accounts about the previous day’s testimony from a former State Department adviser, Michael McKinley. Those reports said that McKinley had quit because he was, as the Associated Press put it, “disturbed by the politicization of foreign policy.” If you check out the transcript, you can see that Mulvaney was saying that of course politics affects foreign policy. He mentions McKinley and says: “Get over it. There’s going to be political influence on foreign policy.” Practically in the next breath, he says, “foreign policy is going to change from the Obama administration to the Trump administration.” He then faults some career government employees for seeking to prevent this.At least one reporter understood this context, because the next question for Mulvaney drew a distinction: Political influence over foreign policy is one thing, the reporter said, but is it OK for the president to try to pressure a foreign government to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden? Mulvaney then stoutly denied that Trump did any such thing, maintaining that the administration’s holding aid to Ukraine “had absolutely nothing to do with Biden.” Like a lot of what Mulvaney said at that press conference, that statement is dubious. But he didn’t admit to using foreign policy for partisan ends and then tell people to get over it.Trump supporters have myths of their own. One is the claim that in September, Representative Adam Schiff, the California Democrat who heads the House Intelligence Committee, tried to pass off a phony version of what the president told Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy in their July 25 phone call as the actual words of the conversation. Trump accused Schiff of fraud and mused about charging him with treason: “He was supposedly reading the exact transcribed version of the call, but he completely changed the words to make it sound horrible.” House Republicans tried to censure Schiff for it, and other Trump supporters keep claiming that Schiff lied. What Schiff actually did was provide a paraphrase of Trump’s remarks, and he was completely open about it. He described how Zelenskiy opened the call and then said, “Shorn of its rambling character and in not so many words, this is the essence of what the president communicates.” Then he gave his version of the gist of Trump’s comments. After finishing, he says, “This is in sum and character what the president was trying to communicate with the president of Ukraine.” Anyone who listened to that and thought Schiff was directly quoting Trump should quit trying to follow the impeachment debate.Republicans have gotten agitated over another distorted comment recently. They say that Mark Zaid, the lawyer for the Ukraine “whistle-blower,” called for a “coup” against Trump soon after he took office. The background to this was a tweet of Zaid’s in January 2017, reacting to Trump’s dismissal of the acting attorney general, Sally Yates. Although Zaid has muddied the waters in trying to defend himself, he appears to have been saying that it was Trump who was starting to perpetrate a coup. It was a dumb tweet: Trump was well within his rights to fire Yates, who had refused to defend his travel ban. But it doesn’t support the Republican case that Ukrainegate is an undemocratic plot by Trump’s enemies. All of these mangled and misunderstood remarks are, in a sense, peripheral to the main debate. Whether Trump should be removed from office shouldn’t turn on a three-year-old tweet from one government employee’s lawyer. Each of these exaggerated stories is, however, helping to create an atmosphere in the minds of fans and foes of the president. Each side can not only interpret events in keeping with its favored narrative - Trump’s corruption or deep-state plotting - but also tell itself that the other side secretly knows it’s wrong.People who are following the impeachment hearings and trying to make up their minds should read and listen to both sides, carefully. It’s not just that each side is trying to spin the facts. It’s that each side is spinning itself. To contact the author of this story: Ramesh Ponnuru at rponnuru@bloomberg.netTo contact the editor responsible for this story: Tobin Harshaw at tharshaw@bloomberg.netThis column does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the editorial board or Bloomberg LP and its owners.Ramesh Ponnuru is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist. Russia says it will return captured naval ships to Ukraine on Monday
Russia will return three captured naval ships to Ukraine on Monday and is moving them to a handover location agreed with Kiev, Crimea's border guard service was cited as saying by Russian news agencies on Sunday. A Reuters reporter in Crimea, which Russian annexed from Ukraine in 2014, earlier on Sunday saw coastguard boats pulling the three vessels through the Kerch Strait toward the Black Sea where they could potentially be handed over to Ukraine. Ukraine has been pushing for their return as a good will gesture from Moscow ahead of a possible four-way peace summit on eastern Ukraine next month. -

Unloved English pointer 'could become extinct' as breed is sent to the doghouse by social media stars
They have a reputation for being strong willed and independent, with boundless energy and a love of exercise from their breeding as gun dogs. Even so they are also said to make great family dogs, patient with children, tolerant of other animals and remaining calm within the perpetual chaos of a family home. But, despite so many attractive features, it appears Britain’s dog owners have fallen out of love with the English Pointer - so much so that dog welfare groups fear it could even become extinct. Dog lovers have turned their back on the Pointer - named after the characteristic pose they assume when they catch the scent of game, their nose pointed toward the game - in favour of more fashionable Continental breeds such as the Labrador. Small breeds have also grown in popularity because they are seen as easier to handle in a city environment, while the Pointer’s love of the outdoors has given the breed a reputation as being difficult to handle. And with few celebrity backers, and little interest in the breed among ‘influencers’ on social media, there is nobody to raise the Pointer’s profile and promote its positive attributes. Indeed several historic British breeds have seen a slump in popularity compared to foreign rivals. Natalie Waller with Jack, an English pointer who is looking for a home Credit: Charlotte Graham/CAG Photography Ltd New figures from the Kennel Club show that new registrations of the English Pointer have gone into steep decline. Registrations of Pointer puppy births are set to number only around 430 by the end of the year, which could see it move for the first time onto the Kennel Club’s ‘At Watch’ list. The list is for those breeds that number between 300 and 450 registrations a year, putting them at risk of disappearing in the future. Bill Lambert, spokesperson for the Kennel Club, said: “The English Pointer is nowhere to be seen in popular culture, is shunned by celebrities who often influence pup popularity As they were bred originally as specialist working dogs, they are energetic, strong and willful. While they can make a great pet for the right owner, who understands their traits and working instincts, they are becoming a ‘forgotten breed’ as they are just longer seen in the country’s streets and parks. “City lifestyles can have a huge impact on this, with many small dogs more suiting urban living. Pointers really do best in the country where they are not confined inside for long periods of time.” The Pointer’s popularity has fallen by almost half in a decade, while its continental cousin, the German Short-Haired Pointer is up 25 per cent across the same period, in part because it is regarded as more of an all-rounder suited to being a pet rather than a working dog. At the same time the “versatile” Labrador is set to reclaim the throne as Britain’s top dog, with 36,443 registrations. This will see it replace the previously highly fashionable French Bulldog - which can suffer from a number of health problems. The predicted Kennel Club registrations of the Labrador is predicted to be 11 per cent higher in 2019 than those of the French Bulldog. Mr Lambert added: “Many dog owners living in the country seem to have lost all knowledge about many older, less popular dog breeds and tend to view the perfect family as containing a Labrador and nothing else.” There has also been a fall in the registration of other previous British favourites, such as the West Highland White Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Boxer and Border Terrier. Their numbers have fallen by over half in a decade, taking them out of the UK’s top ten. Of the ten breeds which have risen the quickest in popularity since 2015, nine are of foreign origin - including the small European Dachshund and Pomeranian, the distinctively fluffy Chinese Chow Chow and the exotic and stylish Japanese Shiba Inu. The Kennel Club Dog Photographer of the Year This compares to just one historically native breed in the top ten, the Queen’s own Welsh Corgi (Pembroke), which saw its popularity boosted by its appearance in the Netflix series The Crown, which returns to the screen on Sunday for a third series. There has also been a royal boost for the Sussex Spaniel, another vulnerable breed, which saw registrations rise by 56 per cent since 2018, when it was named as the most vulnerable breed in the UK with just 34 puppies registered. It is thought the high profile of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are known to be dog lovers, has seen a rise in demand for this breed. However the historic Parsons Russell Terrier, made famous by award-winning silent film, The Artist, could also find itself on the Kennel Club’s Vulnerable Native Breeds list. Compared to the same period in 2018, this British breed has seen a 23 per cent fall in registrations so far this year. Additional reporting by Verity Bowman -

U.S. businesswoman tells Johnson - I've kept your secrets, you've cast me aside
A U.S. businesswoman at the centre of a series of newspaper allegations over British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's conduct while he was mayor of London has said he has cast her aside like "some gremlin" since the furore surfaced. The Sunday Times reported in September that when Johnson was mayor he failed to declare close personal links to Jennifer Arcuri, who received thousands of pounds in public business funding and places on official trade trips. Johnson has said everything was done with full propriety and that there was no interest to declare, and a government audit report last month ruled a decision to award a 100,000 pound ($127,960) grant to a company run by Arcuri was appropriate. -

Forgotten Genocide: How a Quarter of Europe’s Roma Were Murdered by the Nazis, then Erased From History
LONDON-It’s impossible to fathom the scale of the depravity. An eyewitness account by a Holocaust survivor-unearthed for a new exhibition in London-describes the conditions in the “gypsy” section of Auschwitz as even more inhumane than the rest of the appalling facility.“The conditions were worse than in the other camps,” wrote eyewitness Hermann Langbein in 1945. “The route between the huts was ankle deep in mud and dirt. The gypsies were still wearing the clothes that they had been given upon arrival… footwear was missing… The latrines were built in such a way that they were practically unusable for the gypsy children. The infirmary was a pathetic sight.”The Holocaust Didn’t End with the Liberation of Auschwitz and the Nazi Death CampsThe report by Langbein, also a survivor of the Spanish Civil War, is just one of the sickening contemporary accounts highlighted in the exhibition Forgotten Victims: The Nazi Genocide of the Roma and Sinti at London’s Wiener Holocaust Library (to March 11, 2020).Over 90 percent of the Roma held at Auschwitz did not survive the war.In total, it is estimated that up to half a million Roma and Sinti, the name taken by the nomadic people based in Germany, died during the Holocaust. Accurate estimates are impossible but that may have been a quarter of Europe’s Roma and Sinti population. The plight of these people, commonly known as gypsies at the time, was overshadowed by the scale of the genocide perpetrated against Europe’s Jewish community, but the Romani suffering was not simply eclipsed; it was systematically erased in the post-war period. Romani survivors did not qualify for restitution; the mass murder of the Roma was largely ignored at the Nuremberg trials; Germany did not formally recognize that there had been a Romani genocide until 1982.Like homeless and gay victims of the Holocaust, the Roma and Sinti people were primarily categorized by the Nazi killing machine as criminals or “asocials.” For the tiny minority who survived, this meant they struggled to apply for compensation for their treatment in the same way as Jewish survivors.Despite the German authorities’ failure to recognize this as another strand of genocide, there was plenty of evidence that the Nazis were applying similar twisted pseudo-science to portray the Roma and Jews as lesser people. The exhibition highlights the work of a man named Dr Robert Ritter, who was responsible for running the Racial Hygiene and Demographic Biology Research Unit from 1936. In 1941, he was promoted and also became head of the Criminal Biology Unit. Much of his work focused on trying to prove that the Romani people were racially inferior using a vast array of nonsensical and unscientific methods. He supported the sterilization of Roma women and expressed his concern about preventing intermarriage with other Germans. He was also personally responsible for identifying Roma and Sinti communities in Germany and Austria which were then raided by Nazis units who transported thousands to the camps.Ritter was never brought to trial. His racist project had obviously been influential among senior Nazi officials, however. In 1938, the head of the SS Heinrich Himmler wrote: “Experience gained in combating the gypsy nuisance, and knowledge derived from race-biological research, have shown that the proper method of attacking the Gypsy problem seems to be to treat it as a matter of race.”It’s utterly extraordinary that it took the German government until the 1980s to officially take Himmler’s word for it: the mass execution of the Roma and Sinti people was a racially motivated genocide. It wasn’t just within Germany; the Roma and Sinti people were largely left out of the picture when the world united to condemn the horrors of the Holocaust.“There was no reckoning, no recognition,” said Barbara Warnock, curator at the Wiener Holocaust Library. “At the Nuremberg war crimes trials, crimes against Roma weren’t part of the indictments. There are some documents that were entered at Nuremberg that are to do with persecution against Jews that happen to mention persecution against Roma too but it wasn't something that was being particularly focused on or investigated even though people were aware of it. There's never been that big moment of acknowledgement.”Warnock told The Daily Beast that there has been a historic and continued marginalization of Roma communities in Europe. “The failure to acknowledge the extent of persecution and suffering probably hasn't been helpful,” she said.Documents that tell the typically depressing story of Hans Brann, a Roma survivor of Auschwitz, have been located by the Wiener Holocaust Library. He was one of just a couple of thousand Roma who entered Auschwitz and left alive.According to a police letter, the response to his restitution claim was to order a police inspector to investigate his claim, and prove that he was a criminal, not a racial victim. Not all of the documentation survives, but he must have been turned down because six years later Brann made the same claim of restitution. He had waited more than a decade for any recognition of the torment he had suffered. For the Roma people in Europe, the wait goes on. Recent years have seen crackdowns on communities in Italy, France and Hungary.“Reflect upon the situation in Europe today,” said Warnock. “A massive amount of prejudice and discrimination continues.” Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Horoscope
Scorpio(change)
November 17 - It may be possible to move past a vexing obstacle today, and to open a new avenue of exploration as you go. Murmurs of appreciation ripple through a group, with special kudos directed to those responsible for breaking the impasse. This heroic team likely includes you, but you are not overly interested in praise or glory now. You are probably far more excited by the prospect of finally having the chance to scout out what is around the next bend. The rush of freedom is exhilarating when the future looks so bright.
